Albumin is an acidic protein contained most abundantly in serum.
Its roles include maintenance of osmotic pressure in blood and transportation of substances.
It is used extensively as a diluent/stabilizer of biologically sensitive high-molecular weight substances such as enzymes and growth factors, a carrier protein in preparation of antibodies, a blocking agent in the measurement by ELISA, and a secondary reference substance in the measurement of molecular weight, amino acid and nitrogen.
