A substance widely found in animal physiology, cholesterol is a sterol that is especially abundant in Central Nervous System neurons and adrenal gland tissue. It is precursor to bile, sex hormones, adrenal gland hormones and vitamin D. Cholesterol modification is known to activate a molecule called sonic hedgehog (SHH). The product of the hedgehog gene, SHH plays a central role in the hedgehog signaling pathway that regulates morphological development during ontogeny. This product is synthesized from sapogenins extracted from the genus Dioscorea, which also include yams.
