A neuropeptide produced by some neurons in the lateral hypothalamus, orexin-A is an endogenous agonist of the orexin receptor. Orexin-A binds with both orexin receptor subtypes OX1 and OX2. It is reported that orexin-A is associated with sleep and wakefulness as well as food intake. In recent years, it has been found that orexin plays a major role in the sleep disorder narcolepsy.
