Dihydrorhodamine 123 is non-fluorescent and readily taken into cells. It is oxidized by oxidants and the intracellular oxidation-reduction (redox) system to fluorescent rhodamine 123 and accumulated in mitochondria. It is used for detection of reactive oxygen species including superoxides and peroxynitrite.
