Voglibose inhibits α-glucosidase that degrades disaccharides to monosaccharides in the intestines and delays digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. It exhibited inhibitory effects on maltase and sucrase derived from porcine small intestines about 20 times and 30 times higher than those of acarbose and its inhibitory effects on maltase and sucrase derived from rat small intestines are about 270 and 190 times those of acarbose. On the other hand, voglibose does not exhibit inhibitory effect on β-glucosidase because its inhibitory effect on porcine and rat pancreatic α-amylase is about 1/3000 of that of acarbose.
