INF-gamma is produced by activated T cells and NK cells stimulated by alloantigen, tumor, and mitogen, and has various actions including antiviral activity, inhibition of cell or tumor proliferation, and promotion of final differentiation of B cells into antigen producing cells. IFN-gamma is known to act on cells through a specific membrane receptor although the cytotoxicity is partly due to the synergetic effect with TNF-alpha.
